About the Program
The Research Service at the Northport VA Medical Center has been in operation since 1971. Our scope of research has encompassed medical, psychological and surgical research. Our investigators have received numerous awards of excellence and recognition including the William Middleton Award and the VA Superior Performance Award.
Safety in Research Laboratories
Safety in research laboratories is a prime concern for everyone involved. Failure to implement safe operating procedures can cause injury to personnel and damage to laboratory facilities. Review VA research handbooks.
Subcommittee on Research Safety
Safety in research laboratories is a responsibility carried out by appointment of a Research Safety Subcommittee which functions as part of the facility Occupational Safety and Health Committee. The Research Safety Subcommittee coordinates safety activities in the laboratories and ensures that inspections are conducted, that safety training is provided, that an Occupational Health/Industrial Hygiene program is established, that accidents are reported and investigated and that meetings are held periodically to discuss safety issues.
